Summer Planning

Stepping Stones is on summer break, but that doesn't mean that we are not busy.  We are making plans for the upcoming 2018 - 2019 school year.  2017 - 2018 was an awesome year!  We welcomed several new families and enjoyed getting to know them.  We had great classes and learned many new things.  What a blessing it is to share together as home school parents, encourage one another, and enjoy teaching our children together.  Community is a great thing isn't it?

As each new school year approaches it brings changes.  Some of those changes are exciting and anticipated, others not so much!  We are sorry to have some of our members move on to the next chapter in their lives and we wish them all the best, but we will certainly miss them.  That said, the rest of us need to pull together harder to fill the empty spots so that we can make the next year just as great or even better!

We are planning our classes for the upcoming year, and I am excited to share them with you.  Tentatively, this is what is planned:

Preschool:  This class will have lots of time to interact and play together.  They will learn about careers.  Each week a short lesson will teach them about a different career such as police officer, pastor, fireman, etc.  This is loosely based on ABekka's K5 Social Studies Curriculum.  Preschool will meet in the same room for both hours.

K - 2nd Grade:  Science will be taught 1st hour.  Students will learn about the human body, astronomy and much more.  There will be a LOT of experiments to make this a fun time for them.
Native American History will be 2nd hour with opportunity to add 3rd and 4th graders to this class for the 1st semester.  History Pockets will be the chosen curriculum and there will be lots of hands-on projects to keep young student's attention.

3rd - 6th Grade:  Again Science will be taught the 1st hour using the same subjects as in the K-2nd class.  There will be lots of experiments!  This will be an informative and fun class!  For the 1st semester we have a student teacher that will be teaching 5th graders and older Stop Motion Video.  He will be joined by an adult co-teacher.  This young man is passionate about Stop Motion and has been doing it for three years now.  He is taking additional classes himself on this over the summer and is excited to have the opportunity to teach others how to do this.  For the 2nd Semester, we will add a history class.  Details on that as the time approaches.

7th - 8th Grade:  The 1st hour class is Apologia's General Science 2nd Edition.  This age group is flexible.  We have some students who are high school freshmen that will be taking this as a credit course.  We may also have some 6th graders who will be taking the class. We will be doing labs together in class and having discussion as time permits, with most of the reading and written work to be assigned as homework.  The 2nd hour class will be Apologia's Around the World in 180 Days.  Again class time will be discussion of homework with reading and written work being completed at home.

High School:  We are so pleased to be welcoming a new member this year who has volunteered to teach a high school level Chemistry class.  We are using Apologia's Exploring Creation with Chemistry.  Class time will be labs only with the rest of the work needing to be done at home.  This will be a full-credit Science course.  The 2nd hour will be Constitutional Literacy.  This is also a full-credit Government Courses.  Class time will consist of watching a video with Michael Farris lecturing.  We will follow-up with answering questions on the video and discussion.  Each week the students will have to research and write a few paragraphs on a current-event that pertains to the lecture of the week.  I think students will develop a great understanding of the constitution in this class which will be of great benefit and make them better citizens of our country.

Another new event for this year is that we are adding some activity time which can help with physical education.  This will be headed up by our high scholars with parents monitoring.  Each week after closing, the leaders will have a physical activity planned for the group.  They may teach and play a particular sport, or just a group game as they choose.  This is great for our older students to learn leadership skills and great for our younger students to have time to just play together.

As you can see, this year will be packed full of new opportunities and experiences.  We look forward to sharing together, encouraging one another, and making lots of new memories.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and we will plan on seeing you on August 16, 2018 to launch our new school year!

What a year this has been for Stepping Stones!  I believe that this has been one of our best years!  The classes have been filled with information and yet fun at the same time.  Our students have formed new friendships and deepened old ones.  As moms we have enjoyed the fellowship of others that are experiencing the same joys and frustrations as we are, and we are able to lift one another up and share encouragement.

As this year draws to a close, we are making plans for a new year to come!  Please be in prayer and consider how you can be involved in Stepping Stones this next year.  We want to meet the needs of all of our members.  We understand that our needs may be different depending on where we are in our homeschooling journey.  Some of us look to co-op for social involvement for our children and for ourselves, and others are wanting classes for our kids that count toward high school credit and allow us to take something off of our plates at home.  Whichever category you are in - we want to be there for you!

Let's spread the word about our co-op to all of our homeschooling acquaintances and see if we can grow our group for this upcoming year!

It's hard to believe that the summer is so swiftly coming to and end.  This is the time of the year that all homeschoolers are deep into preparations for the up-coming school year.  I don't know about all of you, but this is my favorite time of the school year.  Enthusiasm is high and we are ready to go!

Stepping Stones Homeschooling Group is doing the same.  We met as a group today to make plans for the 2017 - 2018 school year.  It was a great meeting and I am excited to share the results of that meeting with all of you.

As in previous years, we will meet on Thursdays at Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas. Our day will start promptly at 9:00 am by meeting in the large meeting room directly off the dining area when entering the East entrance.  Following pledges and opening our day in prayer, we will disperse to classes.  There will be two class periods.  First hour will be approximately 9:10 to 10:10.  Second hour will run from 10:14 to 11:10.  At 11:15 we will meet back in the large meeting room to have a time of Show & Tell with the students and any needed announcements.  We will dismiss by approximately 11:25 or 11:30.  After dismissal, all are welcome to bring their own lunch and join the group for a social time in the downstairs Pit Stop.

The classes being planned for the year are as follows:

Nursery - there will be nursery care for those who may need it

Preschool - Claudia Craig and Rayne Hamilton are planning to head up the preschool class.  Subjects to be at their discretion.

Lower Elementary - We are planning these classes for Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade.  This group will have Lindee Caulderwood and tentatively Jenny Giar as their teachers.  We are looking at a Health/Nutrition/Cooking Class.  This will cover both first and second hours.

Elementary - This is going to be planned for Third and Fourth Grades.
These students will need to be able to write well and be able to have a reasonable level of spelling ability to participate in this class.
1st hour - History/Geography taught by Carla Duncan
2nd hour - Spanish taught by Jessica Feldman

Middle School - Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Graders. 
These students will be expected to do more in class work and homework
1st hour - Spanish taught by Jessica Feldman
2nd hour - History/Geography taught by Carla Duncan

High School - Eighth through Twelfth Grade
These teachers are planning for these classes to be credit classes and so the amount of work required will be planned to meet the hours needed for credit.  
1st hour - History taught by Jennifer Jenson
2nd hour - Spanish 1 taught by Sherri Rhodes

We are planning a sign up day for the first semester.  We will meet in the downstairs Pit Stop at Grace Community Church on August 22, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.  We will collect dues for the first semester and get student's paperwork filled out and classed signed up.  Please plan to attend that day as it is much easier that first day of classes if all of this is taken care of ahead of time.

We have had several families that are in various life transitions and will not be returning to our group this year.  We did a tentative count today and are looking at maybe eleven families with a total of around 31 students.  We certainly have room for more!  If you are looking for a Homeschool Group or know of someone who is, please feel free to share Stepping Stones information with them, or bring them along on sign up day!

Change is in the air! The Advisory Council is calling a meeting for all who are planning to be a part of Stepping Stones co-op this school year. We want to hear your voice on how our group can better meet the needs of your family. To be able to do that, we need you to do two things.

1. Mark your calendar for July 26, 2017. We will meet at 10:00 am in the library of Grace Community Church. We need all of you to be there!

2. Please respond to these questions. You can private message your response to one of the Advisory Council members. We will take your responses and compile an Agenda for the meeting.

* What is it that you are looking for from co-op?

* What are you willing to commit to the co-op?

As a co-op we will be expecting all families to commit to participation as a teacher, a teacher’s aid, nursery attendant, and/or being on a planning committee for field trips or group parties.

Please share your responses with us by Wednesday, July 19. That way we will have time to compile an agenda for our meeting. Your help is very much appreciated!

February 2, 2017 will begin our new semester of classes for Stepping Stones.  Please join us at Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas.  We will be starting at 9:00 a.m.  The classes will be the same as first semester, and are listed on the "Classes Offered" page.

Winter Break is Almost Over!

2nd Semester begins Thursday, February 4th!


We can't wait to meet new families and see returning members again! Enrollment will begin at 8:30 am on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas. For details on this semester's classes, please check out our Classes Offered page.

All families enrolling in classes for this semester will need to fill out enrollment forms and read and sign the membership agreement.  These documents will be available at enrollment or can be printed HERE. Membership dues for the semester are $20 for families with one child or $30 for families with more than one child. Parents not already working in a classroom will sign up to help in at least one the following areas:
  • Set up and Clean up
  • Valentine's Day Party
  • End of Year Program
  • Standardized Testing
Opening will begin promptly at 9:00 am in the loft with pledges of allegiance, announcements, and prayer. After classes, families will meet back in the loft so parents can escort students to the basement as a group. Until then, enjoy the rest of your winter break!

Only 6 Weeks of Summer Left

It was great to see returning families and meet new families at our Enrollment on Thursday. Now that we have students signed up for classes, we can finalize the class schedule and look forward to our Back To School Picnic and Pool Party.

If you missed enrollment, it's not too late. Enrollment forms are available HERE. You can email them to us at SteppingStonesCoop@yahoo.com and/or bring them with your first semester enrollment fees to the first day of classes on September 3, 2015. On our first day of classes, we will have an updated membership directory, an events calendar, and sign up sheets for our annual events.

We still need classroom helpers in the P.E. class, volunteers to work the Dog Show, and volunteers to help plan our annual events. Please let us know where you would like to help.

Summer is flying by and the Advisory Council has been working on the details for the next school year. The calendar has been updated with all of our events for the next school and a tentative class schedule is on our Classes Offered page. We still need teachers, so let us know if you can help!

Spring Semester Reminders


Our first day of the second semester went well. We welcomed new families into our group and greeted returning families after a long winter break. The rest of our school year will be great!

The Calendar of Events has been updated with all of the events taking place this semester. We have some fun events, like a Valentine's Day party, End of Year Program, and Field Day. And we also have some business to take care of, so get ready for standardized testing and a parent's meeting.

Don't forget that our class schedule is flexible. If your children took a class today that they just didn't like or isn't at their level, feel free to try a different class next week. You can take a look at the class descriptions on our Classes Offered page for more information on each of the classes.

Also, if you haven't paid your membership dues or turned in your membership forms, please remember to bring them with you next week. Information on the membership forms helps us all keep in touch with each other outside of class days. And the membership dues are used to purchase classroom materials and supplies. We also make an annual donation to Grace Community Church because they are so generous in allowing us to use their facilities.

We use Facebook as our primary source of communication with each other. So, be sure to check our Facebook page periodically for homework assignments, event updates, schedule changes, and other conversations. The Advisory Council encourages all members to attend the parent meetings. Your ideas, input, and feedback help us accommodate the homeschooling community. When we have decisions to make, your vote lets us know what you want and need in a homeschool group.

Spring Semester Begins Soon


I hope everyone had a great holiday season. We look forward to seeing new and returning students when our Spring semester begins. Enrollment for the next semester has been scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas beginning at 9:00 am. Please have your enrollment forms and membership dues with you, ready to turn in at enrollment. Forms can be printed from our Join Our Group page and will be available at enrollment. Classes begin February 5, 2015 at 9:00 am in the loft of the church. History Hooray Classes Return to Overbrook


If your children have never tried one of Anne Hawkins' History Hooray classes, I highly recommend signing up early. The classes are in high demand and fill up fast. History Hooray provides an interactive, experiential, and hands-on approach to learning history. And Ms. Hawkins has a knack for appealing to all types of learners.

Summertime Update

We hope your summer is going well. The Stepping Stones Advisory Committee has begun planning for the next school year. Year End Activities

Our End of Year Program and Science Fair has been scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2014. We will have our End of Year Program first, then move right into the Science Fair. Students have the opportunity to perform in the End of Year Program and make a presentation during the Science Fair.  We can't wait to see what everyone has been working on throughout the year!


Field Day has been scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2014. Lots of fun activities have been planned. We will also have a picnic.

The Spring Semester is Upon Us

We will have registration for the 2014 spring semester on the first day of classes, Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. If you did not attend the 2013 fall semester, you will need to bring your Registration Form, Statement of Faith, and Membership Dues. Returning members who sold under $100 in Rada during the last semester need to bring Membership Dues.

Second Semester Planning

Our school year is in full swing and it's been awhile since we've had an Advisory Council Meeting.  The next meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 4:00 p.m at Grace Community Church. All members are encouraged to attend! We will be discussing the next semester and your feedback is important to the planning process.  Childcare will be available for the younger children. If you are unable to attend the meeting, meeting minutes will be posted on Facebook and sent out via email. We hope to see you there!

Not Back to School

Stepping Stones classes begin Thursday, September 5, 2013!

Whether you generally follow the public school schedule or homeschool year-round, it is NOT back to school time for homeschoolers. Does that mean we are missing out?

Here is a list of some of the things homeschoolers miss out on during the back to school season:
  • Paying extra for that gym uniform when you have ample play clothes at home
  • Easing your children's anxieties about a new teacher, a new schedule, and new friends
  • The smell of fresh carbon monoxide first thing in the morning as the bus arrives
  • Chaos and long lines at enrollment
  • Paying in advance for lunches
  • Restrictions on what we can and cannot learn
  • Standardized testing (in some states)

Homeschoolers tend to use library services - a lot! Public libraries offer free access to books, movies, music, video games, research materials and so much more. Think about how much you would have to spend to purchase all of the materials you have borrowed from a library.

Free Homeschool Planner

With another school year about to begin, most of us are rushing to get organized. To make things easier, The Home School Mom is offering a free planner!

I am impressed with how customizable and comprehensive this planner is. You can download the entire planner or just the pages you need. Pages come in lined and unlined versions. Yearly, monthly, and weekly calendars are available. She has even included menu and meal planning pages, chore charts and to-do lists! My personal favorites are the Unschooling Record Keeper pages.

Enrollment and Kick-Off Picnic!

Enrollment is open now for Stepping Stones Homeschool Co-Op which meets at Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas on Thursday mornings at 9am.  We encourage everyone to get their enrollment forms turned in this year by August 8th!!  That way we can make our class groupings, which are dependent upon our enrollment numbers.

Enrollment is on August 8, 2013 at 10:00a.m. at Grace Community Church in Overbrook, Kansas.

We are planning a Kick-Off picnic at Overbrook City Park on August 23rd at 6:30pm.  More about that later!

Our co-op school year will start on September 5th, 2013!!

Winter Session Coming Soon!

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Christ-filled Christmas with loved ones.  We are looking forward to the start of our winter session which is rapidly approaching.  That session will run from January 10, 2013 through February 28, 2013.  We will be staying with our morning schedule that we have followed for a couple of years now, Thursday mornings from 9:00-12:30, Grace Community Church in Overbrook.  Our class divisions this semester will be 4 classes:   Preschool- 1st Grade/   2nd-3rd Grade/  4th-5th Grade/
6th & Up.  With the students from last semester that are returning that gives us appoximately 7/ 6/ 8/ 10 for numbers of students in those respective classes, a total of 31 children.  We do expect several new students however, so those numbers will change some. We will be posting the class schedule soon (most likely tomorrow), so check back to see what we are offering this session.  We will also post information about our pre-enrollment.  For now if you have any questions, feel free to contact us at steppingstonescoop@yahoo.com.

Gone to the Dogs

  Today our group went to the dogs, literally!  This was our second year of helping out with the Capital City Circuit Dog show at the Kansas Expocentre.  Our duties are clean up duty & selling programs.  It's dirty job, but someone's got to do it!

    To tell you the truth, at the beginning of the day, everyone is squeemish about the clean up, but by the end of the day, just getting to be there and watch these amazing dogs & pet some, plus just being with our buddies, loosens everyone up and it becomes a ton of FUN!

Drama!

Working on getting Kevin Stone (pastor, playwrite, and radio personality) to teach a drama class for us this fall. If you are planning on attending our coop this fall and would be interested, please let us know! He does a fantastic job! The pic is from the performance of Pilgrim's Progress we did with him last. He has the kids help build the set, do the costumes, as well as learn their lines. A wonderful opportunity!

What are we doing?

What are we doing for the next year? I'm glad you asked:) We're breaking it up into 8 week sessions (Sept-Oct., Jan-Feb., & Mar-Apr.)  The 1st session is public speaking/Spanish/genealogy for the older kids (5th & up), genealogy/pub. speaking/art for 3 & 4th; What's in the Bible/cooking/Mr. Popper's Penguins for 2nd; & What's in the Bible/music for K-1st. of course depending on how many of each level we have determines whether or not we have to tweak the age levels (we don't generally want more than 15 in a class).  The 3rd 8 weeks we'll brake from our norm and have speakers (like meteorologist Matt Miller, and the Topeka Zoo), special craft projects, and field trips.  Our enrollment day is August 9th, at 10am at Grace Community Church in Overbrook - come see what we're all about!
